Drums, IBCs or flexitank? Packaging liquid chemicals for export

The packaging you choose for liquid chemicals is not a detail you settle at the end of a negotiation. It determines how much product fits in a container, what equipment you need at the receiving end, how much you pay in freight per kilogram of active material, and how much waste you are left holding after unloading.

The four options

Drums (170 – 220 kg)

HDPE or steel drums are the default for most detergent raw materials. They suit buyers who receive mixed loads, who have no bulk-transfer equipment, or who need to move small quantities around a plant. Drums are easy to sample, easy to trace to a batch, and easy to sell on in part loads.

The cost is space. Round drums do not tessellate, so a container carries less product than its weight limit would suggest. As a working figure, a 20′ container takes about 19.4 MT of SLES 70 in 170 kg drums.

IBC totes (1,000 – 1,100 kg)

An IBC is a cube, so it uses container space far better than drums, and it discharges through a bottom valve straight into your production line. For a plant running continuous batches this removes a great deal of manual handling.

What you need in return: a forklift rated for the loaded weight, floor space for empties, and a plan for what happens to the cages. IBCs are worth returning or reselling; treating them as disposable erodes the saving.

Flexitank (up to ~24 MT)

A flexitank is a single large bladder fitted inside a standard 20′ container. It gives the lowest cost per tonne of any option and eliminates drum handling entirely — but it commits you to a single product, a single batch and a full-container quantity. You also need a pump and a receiving tank at destination.

Flexitanks make sense for a plant consuming full containers of one material such as LABSA on a regular schedule. They rarely make sense for a first order.

Bags and sacks

For solids — powders, granules, scent booster beads — 25 kg sacks on a stretch-wrapped pallet remain the practical standard, with big bags used where volumes justify them.

Comparing on the right number

The mistake to avoid is comparing packaging on the price of the packaging. Compare on landed cost per kilogram of active material. That single figure absorbs the differences in container utilisation, unloading labour, product loss and disposal — and it frequently reverses the ranking that unit price suggested.

Climate and transit time

Viscous materials behave differently at the two ends of a long voyage. SLES paste stiffens in cold weather and may need warming before it will transfer. LABSA is corrosive and requires acid-resistant containment. If your route crosses a cold season or your discharge port has limited covered storage, say so when you request a quote — it changes the packaging recommendation.

Consolidating a shipment

If your volumes do not fill a container of any single material, mixing several raw materials into one load usually beats waiting to accumulate a full container of one. Consolidation shortens your lead time and spreads the freight across more product.
